The mountain tour up the Wiesbachhorn is a classic, and was for the longest time regarded as a really tough challenge. Though the climb should not be underestimated even now, because the glacier has receded the hike has changed quite considerably – in high summer, crampons are generally not needed anymore. The only true tight squeeze is the steep chimney between the Heinrich-Schwaiger-Haus and the Kaindl ridgeline.

The path to the Wiesbachhorn

We begin by taking a ride on the shuttle bus from Gasthaus Kesselfall to the trailhead. From there, we ascend to Mooserboden reservoir and cross the mighty dam wall. Beyond it, you can already make out the zigzag path up to the Heinrich-Schwaiger-Haus. In countless switchbacks, it rises to 2,802 m in elevation, where the refuge hut invites us to enjoy a short break. Just beyond there, the path takes us in an easterly direction through a striking chimney equipped with safety features. We then continue with a steep climb to the Kaindl ridgeline, which we reach at the Unterer Fochezkopf. From the ridge we follow the steep western flank to the summit ridge of the Grosses Wiesbachhorn. Here, in springtime, you have to reckon with occasionally icy fields of firn snow. The descent takes us down the same route as the climb up.

Fürthermoar Tip

The Wiesbachhorn is one of the most beautiful and impressive peaks in the Eastern Alps. Not the highest summit in Austria, but with breathtaking views of the highest of them all, the Grossglockner. Take plenty of time for this mountain, and enjoy the marvelous panoramas and the great ascent up to the Kaindlgrat. After hiking back down, you should definitely schedule a stop-off at the Fürthermoar Alm, where you can enjoy homemade dishes and wet your whistle with cool refreshing drinks. The last shuttle leaves at 5 p.m. – but so that you are not pressed for time, why not stay for one night at the Fürthermoar Alm. You will enjoy a marvelous sleep and be able to dream of a great alpine tour.

As an option you can do the tour in the other direction. Take the hike from the Kesselfall restaurant to the Fürthermoar Alm on the day before. The hike is easy and stunning, it takes you through a nice jungle. After 2,5 hours you will reach the Fürthermoar Alm. On the next morning, we can take you to the Mooserboden at about 5:00 a.m., where you can start your tour to the Wiesbachhorn.

The team at the Fürthermoar Alm look forward to welcoming you here as our guests!
